Interview

Well if it isn't the respectable Mr. Levels
Yes sir it is.

First off, what does your name mean and why did you decide to call your self Levels?
I chose the name Levels because i felt i was evolving as an MC at the time. I felt I was adaptable when it came to making songs and writing rhymes. It had so many meanings to me, the name matched my style.

That makes sense

How did you come up with the rap hustle web site before the label?
I'm a rapper and i was looking to promote myself online and i had the knowledge to make a professional web site. The task then became either promoting myself direct and up front or creating a buzz by some other means and then using that buzz to power my name. Therefore with new technologies popping up i caught a ride on the torrent file download train. I made a mix tape download site, with hopes to cross promote me and anyone i knew as well. I was thinking what embodied the struggle of a upcoming rapper, so i thought rap hustle and looked if the domain name was available and it was, the rest is history

That's a great promoting scheme

Now about the rap hustle the label, how did that come together?
Basically i was doing so many hip hop related activities with WLp and DJ Phame from hip hop tracks to live performances that, when the thought of forming a label came along by means of the kid phame, i jumped at the opportunity, plus it incorporated a familiar name rap hustle.

What's a day in the life of Levels?
I wake wipe the cold out my eyes, sit for a second, then take a shower and get ready for the day, get dressed and go to college, do my classes, come back home, write some rhymes and overview college work, maybe record a verse or two, see how the rap hustle site doing, call people up or what not, just keep focused, mean while eating and shitting whenever possible. Basically whatever happens, is going to happen, but the basic structure going to be simple and humble nothing too wild for me.

You just released your second mix tape "Hearts at War", can you tell us a little about it?
Well after i did the first mix tape, "That's Life" I wanted to out do it on the second mix tape, and i wanted to talk about current events that was going on around me. So i made concept records and political records, people could enjoy, all the time keeping with the theme "Hearts at War". Basically it goes from talking about all the politics and streets to just trying to live on and party but then realizing close to the end of the mix tape, i can't forget what's going on in this world in the statements i make.

How does "That's life" and "Hearts at War" differ from each other and are there any similarities in both?
They differ because i was narrow minded in the political statements i made with "That's Life" mix tape compared to "Hearts At War". Also "Hearts at War" has more full songs than "That's Life" Mix tape, i decided, i didn't really want to do a whole bunch of short freestyle's to fill up the mix tape. "Hearts at War" and "That's Life" are similar though, because on both i do a lot of different topics and just have fun with it.

What's your favorite track on hearts at war?
Hmm. So many tracks i like but my favorite has to be, Lond I Come From. Never before had i talked so much about my place of birth jamaica on a track and it felt good to rep, where i was born at.
